We Believe: Foundations of Faith

We Believe: Foundations of Our Faith

What Do You Believe—and Why Does It Matter?
This August, we're launching a powerful new sermon series called “We Believe: Foundations of Faith,” centered around one of the most historic and spiritually rich declarations in Christianity—the Apostles’ Creed.
In a culture overflowing with opinions and uncertainty, the Apostles’ Creed gives us a deep well of clarity and conviction. It’s not just an old church tradition—it’s a bold statement of what we believe as followers of Jesus. These words have been spoken by Christians for nearly 2,000 years, uniting believers across nations, denominations, and generations.
This series is an invitation to rediscover, reflect, and reclaim the essential truths that shape our lives. Whether you're new to the faith or a long-time believer, this series will give you deeper roots and fresh vision.

Series Overview: Week-by-Week Breakdown

Week 1 (August 3): I Believe in God – One God, Father, Creator
We begin with the source of all life: “I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.”
We’ll explore God’s nature as a loving Father, His power as Creator, and what it means to live in trust—not fear—in a God-authored world.
Read Along: Genesis 1, Psalm 19, Matthew 6:9
Application: Spend time this week noticing signs of God’s presence in creation—sunsets, kindness, provision. Begin each day thanking God as your Father.

Week 2 (August 10): I Believe in Jesus – Our Lord and Savior
“I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord…”
This week focuses on the life, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus. We’ll look at how Jesus is not only Savior but Lord—the center of our story, the King of all.
Read Along: Luke 1:26–38, Philippians 2:5–11
Application: Reflect on what it means to truly call Jesus "Lord" in your daily decisions, relationships, and goals.

Week 3 (August 17): I Believe in the Holy Spirit – Presence and Power
“I believe in the Holy Spirit…”
This message highlights the Spirit’s role as Comforter, Advocate, and Empowerer. We'll see how the Spirit is active in our lives today—giving gifts, guiding hearts, and creating unity.
Read Along: John 14:16–17, Acts 2:1–4, 1 Corinthians 12
Application: Ask the Holy Spirit to make you more aware of His voice. Journal moments where you sense His guidance or promptings.

Week 4 (August 24): I Believe in the Church – One Body, Many Members
“…the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints…”
Church is more than a building—it’s a global, timeless community of believers. We'll explore how we are called to be a living sign of Christ’s body on earth.
Read Along: Ephesians 4:1–6, 1 Corinthians 12:12–27
Application: Reach out to someone in the church you haven’t connected with in a while. Invite them to lunch or pray with them.

Week 5 (August 31): I Believe in Eternal Life – The Hope That Grounds Us
“…the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.”
The Creed ends with a promise—God is not finished. We’ll look at how forgiveness, resurrection, and everlasting life shape how we live today with bold hope.
Read Along: Romans 6:4–5, Revelation 21:1–5
Application: Consider what eternal life means for your current priorities. What would change if you lived fully in light of eternity?

Why the Apostles’ Creed Matters Today
In her book Changing Signs of Truth, Crystal Downing reminds us that every generation must wrestle with meaning—what signs, symbols, and beliefs anchor us in truth? The Apostles’ Creed is a semiotic anchor—a trusted signpost in a world that constantly changes its meaning.
It teaches us that faith is not just emotional or experiential—it’s confessional. We speak it. We declare it. We stand on it.
When we say “I believe,” we are not just reciting history—we are stepping into a story of hope, purpose, and resurrection power.

Final Word
In a time when many wonder what’s real and what’s worth believing, the Apostles’ Creed stands tall—not as a relic, but as a roadmap. Come discover what the Church has always believed, and why it still changes everything.
See you in August. Let’s declare it together: We believe!
